How to Install Internet Explorer 9 in Windows 8

  1. Home
  2. Windows
  3. Windows 8

I have a few Windows 8.1 tablets here. But beause of some legacy websites that will only run the wesites in IE8, is there a way to downgrade IE11 on win 8.1?  Unfortunatly these legacy websites will only run in IE8 (no firefox, chrome, etc).

All the searching i have done, is turing up nothing, just hoping somone has a work around.

thanks!

I don't think it would work.  Even on Windows 7, Microsoft Updates lists IE11 as part of important updates, rather than optional updates.  But I do not see any improvement on IE11 compared to any of the previous few versions.

Why are you trying to downgrade it anyway?  If it's a compatibility issue, you can always opt to use compatibility view on IE11.

It is compatability issues.  I have tried to run the websites in IE11 with in compatabiltiy view, no luck.

thanks!

You could use Chrome with Legacy browser support:

Works like a charm.

Rant Warning

I wish we were allowed to hunt down web site admins that tie sites to specific versions of a web browser and beat them with a large.......Ban hammer!

I mean really This was a horrible idea 20 years ago. why do they insist on continuing this practice

End Rant

Unfortunately you cannot downgrade IE to a level below what ships with the OS. If windows 8.1 now comes with IE 11 that is the lowest version of IE that will be able to be installed on that OS

IE tab for Firefox may help also.

Couldn't agree more. There's a reason why web standards exist. If you have to use a browser specific hack to make your app do something special then maybe you need to find a different way to accomplish it.

Edit: Just had a thought, if these tablets are running full Windows 8 and not the RT version you could...as much as I hate to suggest this...run a very limited XP VM that's locked down to the point of only allowing IE to run within it.

This has worked for me in the past a few times. It is probably your best bet, seeing as how you can not downgrade to IE8. I believe FireFox has something similar.

I wish they would have kept XP Mode for Windows 8 like they had in Windows 7. That would have done the trick.

Chrome also have an IE Tab

You could also try Maxthon in Legacy mode.

Log on to the Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 computer. (Windows 8.1 and Internet Explorer 11 are used in this demonstration.).

From the Start screen, click the Internet Explorer tile to initialize the program.

Once the interface opens up, press the F12 key on the keyboard to trigger the developer options that are integrated within the application.

Once the developer options are visible at the bottom of the Internet Explorer interface, from the left section, click the Emulation option to go to the Emulationinterface. Alternatively you can also click Ctrl 8 simultaneously to go to the same interface.

Under the Mode section, choose the Windows Phone option from the Browser profile drop-down list.

Once this is done, choose Internet Explorer 9 from the User agent string drop-down list.

As soon as you will choose the above mentioned option, you will get the legacy interface and resolution, and you can start using the IE10 or IE11 as IE9.

I bought new computer with IE11 and Windows 8.1 and had the same WEB.MAIL.MIL issues addressed in this blog.  Fought with it for hours.  Fixed it trying the steps below.  Ironically if you fix MSAF, you fix WEB.MAIL.MIL.

First make sure you have 1.0 and 3.0 SSL protocols enables your IE Advanced Options.  Next, go to MSAF.army and try to log on.  If you get the SSL error page (if no error, sorry but this won't work), run the FBCA Cross-Certificate remove program MSAF offers as a link on the SSL pop-up err window.  Then follow these instructions.

  1. On the SSL error page, click the link entitled FBCA Cross-Certificate Removal.
  2. Select Open in the dialog window.
  3. In the new WinZip window that displays, double-click the FBCA file.
  1. Select the Run option on the next screen that displays.
  2. When prompted in the new DOS window that displays, press Enter.
  3. When prompted, press Enter again to continue. This will close the DOS window.
  4. Close all web browser windows.
  5. Re-open your web browser and login to MSAF.

If this fixes your MSAF issue, it will also fix your WEB.MAIL.MIL issue!!!!
